It has been identified as a proliferation marker being expressed on many solid tumours as well as hematological neoplasms. Hence, CD 71 expression was assessed as a flow cytometric marker for leukemia and lymphoproliferative neoplasms. However, only few studies aimed to address its diagnostic and prognostic implications as well as its relation to clinical and laboratory markers. So, our study aimed at evaluation of the significance of CD71 (transferrin receptor 1, TfR-1) as a flow cytometric marker for the diagnosis of acute leukemia (AL). Methods: Seventy two patients diagnosed as acute leukemia; fifty six acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and sixteen Precursor B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (pre B ALL) were enrolled in the study and assessed for CD71 expression on blast cells by flow cytometry. Results: CD71expression was found to be significantly higher in acute myeloid leukemias than precursor B lymphoblastic leukemia (p:0.000) while median of MFI of CD71 was significantly higher in B lymphoblastic leukemia (p:0.016) than acute myeloid leukemia with the most remarkable expression was on poorly differentiated AML FAB subtypes. Conclusion: CD71 may be useful for the differential diagnosis of precursor B-ALL from AML in addition it could be useful in the evaluation of differentiation stage in case of AML.

Evaluation of Changes in NFKB Gene Expression Following Epstein-Barr Virus and its Participation in the Half-Life of Patients With Acute Epstein-Barr Positive Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Aim: Leukemia targets are one of the most common childhood malignancies. Epstein-Barr virus is a tumorigenic virus of the herpes family of viruses and causes primary infection in young children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the increase in NFKB expression following EBV virus and its contribution to the half-life of EBV-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients. Evaluation of the CD123 Expression and FLT3 Gene Mutations in Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Background and Objective: Identification of cytogenetic and molecular changes plays an important role in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. Thus, they are used in classification, prognosis and treatment of the disease. The CD123 expression and FLT3 gene mutations are also the variations that may assist in prognosis and treatment of patients with AML.Methods:</...

Evaluation of BAALC gene expression in normal cytogenetic acute myeloid leukemia patients in north-east of Iran

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is known as one of the most common leukemia among adults. Environmental and different genetic factors affect disease process, prognosis and treatment. Among different genetic factors NPM1, FLT3, MLL and BAALC genes are the most effective on patient's survival rate. The aim of this study was to assess amount of BAALC gene expression in AML patients, and i...

Cytometric evaluation of transferrin receptor 1 (CD71) in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Transferrin receptor 1 (CD71) is a transmembrane glycoprotein responsible for cellular iron uptake. Higher expression of CD71 has been identified as a negative prognostic marker for numerous solid tumor types and for some lymphomas. The aim of this study was to evaluate CD71 expression on acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells and to follow its possible clinical correlations. Sixty one patien...

The evaluation of TLR1, TLR2, TLR4, TLR7, and TLR8 expression levels in the newly-diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is described by the clonal expansion of myeloid blasts with abnormal differentiation. Considering the role of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in inflammation induction and the effect of chronic inflammation on cancer development, investigating the state of TLRs’ expression in human malignancies has attracted scientists’ attention. Methods: In this study, 36 ...
